1.

Annotate the following passages with reference to context, giving proper critical notes also (any five) :

(a) Never before had I been left among strangers all by myself and I felt lonely and homesick, but not for long. I managed to fit into some extent in the life at school and work and play kept me busy.
(b) In the European School at Calcutta, her brother and she had to tolerate severe tortures by the white students. The white boys persecuted her brother by pushing a pointed pencil through his nostril. When she protested, she was overpowered by the tough Anglo-Indians.
(c) Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and few to be chewed and digested.
(d) Ideas have become far more important to us than action-ideas so cleverly expressed in the books by the intellectuals in every field. The more cunning, the more subtle, those ideas are the more we workship them and the books that contain them.
(e) We must be completely sincere with ourselves and then adjust ourselves to circumstances. We must never lie to ourselves. If it is true that we do not know perfectly until love be perfectly.
(f) A single error of a hair's breath, of the smallest conceivable portion of time, would be fatal : the precision of the movement must be like mathematical truth, their rapidity is like lightning.
(g) We all need help. We need guidance for journeys through life. Even the most successful of us need reminder and fresh, crisp articulations of the truths we only vaguely grasp that have, in one way or another, let us to what ever we have managed to, accomplish.
